Populations, Communities, and Species Interaction

Step 1: Download and print the Unit 3 worksheets.

Then read Chapter 3 in your textbook (Principles of Environmental Science, 5th edition, by Cunningham and Cunningham) and answer the questions on your worksheets.

OPTIONAL: For each chapter in Principles of Environmental Science, the publisher's website includes additional information, tutorials, self-tests, and web links. This is an additional source of information to help students learn and synthesize the information presented in each Chapter. (Use of the publisher's website in this course is strictly optional.)

Step 2: Once again, your textbook covers some of the material in Chapter 3 in a very brief manner! If this is your first exposure to these concepts, you may need additional help. I have provided five online tutorials to help you with some of the concepts for this unit. These tutorials are accessible from the Unit 3 webpage (on the Biology 105 website), and correspond to the textbook and worksheets according to the following table:

Step 3: For lab points, do the lab activity entitled “Life in a 20 Gallon Ecosystem.” This activity includes observations made in the Biology Learning Center, but can be completed at home. The link to the instructions for this lab activity is available below. There are worksheets for this activity in your Unit 3 worksheet packet. When you have completed the activity, take your worksheets to the front desk in the Biology Learning Center for lab points.

Step 4: For lab points, use the EcoBeaker software program to complete the lab activity entitled “Competitive Exclusion.” Please note that this lab has been renamed "Niches and Competition." It is the SAME lab, just a different name. This computer simulation lab activity must be done in the Biology Learning Center. The EcoBeaker manual (with instructions for the lab) is located on the shelves underneath Model S (the cat skeleton). There are worksheets for this activity in your Unit 3 worksheet packet. When you have completed the activity, take your worksheets to the front desk in the Biology Learning Center for lab points.

Please note that the EcoBeaker manuals include photos of some of the organisms featured in the EcoBeaker lab activities, so that you can put a "face" to a "name" (so to speak).

Step 5: For lab points, use the EcoBeaker software program to complete the lab activity entitled “Keystone Predator.” This computer simulation lab activity must be done in the Biology Learning Center.

Please note that the EcoBeaker manualsinclude photos of some of the organisms featured in the EcoBeaker lab activities, so that you can put a "face" to a "name" (so to speak).

Step 6: Prepare for the Unit 3 Exam. Study your completed worksheets, and take the online self test. Remember to study the geographical regions and countries from your Unit 3 worksheets!

Step 7: Come in to the Biology Learning Center to take your Unit 3 Exam. The exam will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions, , including map questions about the geographical regions and countries from your Unit 3 worksheets.
