Human Populations
Step 1: Download and print the Unit 4 worksheets.
Then read Chapter 4 in your textbook (Principles of Environmental Science, 5th edition, by Cunningham and Cunningham) and answer the questions on your worksheets. OPTIONAL: For each chapter in Principles of Environmental Science, the publisher's website includes additional information, tutorials, self-tests, and web links. This is an additional source of information to help students learn and synthesize the information presented in each Chapter. (Use of the publisher's website in this course is strictly optional.) Step 2: For lab points, use the EcoBeaker software program to complete the lab activity entitled Barnacles. This computer simulation lab activity must be done in the Biology Learning Center. The EcoBeaker manual (with instructions for the lab) is located on the shelves underneath Model S (the cat skeleton). There are worksheets for this activity in your Unit 4 worksheet packet. When you have completed the activity, take your worksheets to the front desk in the Biology Learning Center for lab points. Please note that the EcoBeaker manuals include photos of some of the organisms featured in the EcoBeaker lab activities, so that you can put a "face" to a "name" (so to speak). Step 3: For lab points, do the lab activity entitled The Rule of 70. This activity can be completed at home. The link to the instructions for this lab activity is available below. There are worksheets for this activity in your Unit 4 worksheet packet. When you have completed the activity, take your worksheets to the front desk in the Biology Learning Center for lab points. Step 4: For lab points, do the lab activity entitled "Questions and Hypotheses: More Practice." This lab can be done anywhere with internet access, and the link to the instructions for this activity is available below. The worksheets for this activity are in your Unit 1 worksheet packet. When you have completed the activity, take the results to the front desk in the Biology Learning Center for lab points. This lab is great practice for getting started with your Desert Ecology Experiment assignment (Step 5), so please do this lab first! Step 5: For 42 assignment points, do the activity entitled Desert Ecology Experiment. This activity includes a desert ecology experiment that you will design and complete. This assignment can be completed at home. The link to the instructions for this activity is available below. There are several parts to and various deadlines for this assignments, so read the directions carefully and ask questions! Step 6: Optional. Learn more about human population in the news. Step 7: Prepare for the Unit 4 Exam. Study your completed worksheets and take the online self test. Remember to study the geographical regions and countries from your Unit 4 worksheets! Step 8: Come in to the Biology Learning Center to take your Unit 4 Exam. The exam will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions, including map questions about the geographical regions and countries from your Unit 4 worksheets.
