The Human Genome Project is an immense project
that involves sequencing approximately 3 billion nucleotide bases
(A, T, G and C) in human DNA. A gene, such as the gene for eye
color, is composed of hundreds of nucleotide bases. In February,
2001, scientists estimated that human DNA contains approxmimately
30,000 genes - less than half of the earlier estimates of 100,000
genes.
To gain a general background about the project,
I'd recommend reading "About
the Human Genome Project" and "The
Science Behind the Human Genome Project" from the Human
Genone Project Information Website.

Asked Questions about the Human Genome Project.
