Internet Activity - Telomeres, Aging and Cancer |
Time: This activity will take 20 - 30 min. to complete.
You learned a little about telomeres in Chapter 14 in your text (pages 271-272). Telomeres and telomerase, the enzyme that builds telomeres, have important implications for aging and cancer.
You will view the "Facts about Telomeres and Telomerase" web page from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. This site has a good review of information you already know, and provides a good foundation for new knowledge. The site also has animations. The animations aren't required, but they will help to clarify the concepts presented. The "Flash Player" plug-in is required to view the animations. Your internet browser may already have this plug-in installed - you'll know because you'll be able to see the animations. If you can't see the animations, you can download the plug-in for free. Go to www.macromedia.com/downloads/ and click on the link to "Macromedia Flash Player".
The "Facts about Telomeres and Telomerase" web site is currently down -- click here for the answers to the questions on the worksheet
Please answer the related questions on your worksheet.
When you have answered the questions on your worksheet, please bring your worksheet to the front desk in the Biology Lab for lab points.
