Textbook assignment

Step 1:

Read Chapters 4 and 5, all pages, in your text and answer the related questions on your worksheets.

If you need help, there is an answer key at the front desk of the Biology Learning Center.

Textbook publisher's web activities

Step 2: Complete the following activities from the textbook publisher's website. Answer the related questions on your worksheet. These activities are from a previous edition of your textbook - that's OK. (Note: Only complete the activities listed below, not all of the activities for each text chapter.)

Chapter 5 (Cell Structure) textbook publisher's web activities (corresponds with Ch 4 in the new 8th edition book)

  • 5.1 - Art Quiz - Logarithmic scale of cell measurement (Recommended, internet connection required)
  • 5.2 - Animal cell structure A (labeling)
  • 5.2 - Animal cell structure B (labeling)
  • 5.2 - Plant cell structure (labeling)
  • 5.2 - Prokaryotes
  • 5.2 - Eukaryotes
  • 5.2 - Cell Structure (labeling)
  • 5. 3 - Anatomy of the nucleus (labeling)
  • 5.3 - Golgi apparatus structure (labeling)
  • 5.3 - Mitochondrion structure (labeling)
  • 5.3 - Chloroplast structure (labeling)
  • 5.3 - Endomembrane
  • 5.3 - Energy
  • 5.3 - Cytoskeleton

Chapter 6 (Membranes) textbook publisher's web activities (corresponds with Ch 5 in the new 8th edition book)

  • 6.1 - Membrane Structure
  • 6.3 Diffusion (ESP)
  • 6.3 - Osmosis (ESP)
  • 6.4 - Exocytosis/Endocytosis (ESP)
  • 6.5 - Exploration - Active transport (Recommended)
  • 6.5 - Active Transport (ESP)

To view the activities, you must have plug-ins for Shockwave and RealPlayer installed on your computer. Click here for directions to download the plug-ins.

Lab activities

Please follow the directions below and answer the related questions on your worksheet.

Step 3: Complete Internet Activity - Cytoskeleton Tutorial
(no points, but important for your test)

Step 4: Complete In-Class Activity - Observing Cells under the Microscope
(for lab points)

Step 5: Complete In-Class Activity - The Importance of Surface Area
(for lab points)

Step 6: Complete In-Class Activity - Cell Model Review
(no points, but important for your test)

Self quiz

Step 7: Review material from lesson 4 to prepare for your exam.

Use the self-quiz below to review material from lesson 4 that will be on your exam. These questions are similar, but not identical, to questions on your exam.

Optional

Cells Alive
Check out the cell biology portion of this site. It includes an interactive animal cell and plant cell - you can roll over different organelles and review their names and functions.

The Biology Project - Cell Biology
View tutorials and problem sets - try the "Cell membranes", "Studying cells" and "Prokaryotes, eukaryotes and viruses".

Biologymad
Click on the "sitemap" link, and click the links in the "microscopy and cells" section. This site offers a good review of the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, as well as movement of materials across the cell membrane.
