What is a Primer?

A primer is typically defined to be an elementary textbook that serves as an introduction to a subject of study. Ideally a primer should be self-contained. Unfortunately, some of my primers, such as the algebra primer, are not self-contained; they are really a review of the subject.

Acknowledgements:

Some of these primers were created from old class notes while on sabbatical at Pima Community College.

(a.) Math prerequisites for physics topics

1a. Algebra primer

This primer is a quick review of the key ideas of beginning algebra through college algebra. Many of the ideas in this primer are not derived from scratch and require previous knowledge of the subject.

2a. Trigonometry primer

This primer develops the basic properties from scratch and requires no previous knowledge of the subject. This is a fairly thorough introduction to the trig needed for doing introductory-level physics.

3a. Vector primer

This primer develops the basic properties from scratch and requires no previous knowledge of the subject. This is a fairly thorough introduction to working with vectors.

4a. Calculus primer

This primer is not yet written, but the problems are done.

(b.) Business math

1b. Business Mathematics 1

This primer is a fairly thorough introduction to compound interest (including derivations of the fundamental compound interest formulas) and introductory probability.

2b. Compound Interest primer

This primer is a fairly thorough introduction to compound interest (including derivations of the fundamental compound interest formulas). It starts out with the basics, then moves on to topics that are beyond what one would get in a standard college algebra course, or business math course. This primer would make a great introduction to more advanced investment books, such as the classic book Interest theory by Keller.

3b. Probability primer

This primer is a fairly thorough introduction to probability (including derivations). It starts out with the basics (including elementary set theory), then moves on to to introduce the concept of a one-dimensional random walk (stochastic process). This primer together with the compound interest primer would make a nice one-semester course on business mathematics. In fact, this is exactly my Business mathematics 1 book above.
