Information About Mexican Automobile Insurance
You are expected to purchase a policy that covers your vehicle while you are on this fieldtrip in Mexico. I am including here some approximate information on rates and coverages to help you plan for this. There are many companies that sell policies; just look in the yellow pages. Pima Community College buys its policies from San Javier Mexican Insurance (327-1255, 2900 E. Broadway, ask for Cecilia).
It is illegal to drive in Mexico without the proper insurance.

Mexican insurance policies cover comprehensive and collision insurance, liability, legal aid, bail bond, med-air vac, and towing. A 2-day policy will vary depending on the value of the car being insured. A policy for a $5,000 car is about $27.50; one for a $15,000 car is about $34.10.

Some American automobile insurance policies cover collision and comprehensive in Mexico within a certain distance of the border. You will have to call your insurance company or agent to find out if your policy covers travel to Puerto Peñasco (approximately 60 miles from the border). If it does, you will still need to buy Mexican automobile insurance but it will only cover liability, legal aid, bail bond, med-air vac, and towing. The cost for this type of policy is about $25.30, regardless of the value of your car.

To obtain a policy, you will need to provide proof of registration for your car. After you obtain a policy, you MUST give me a photocopy of your policy so that I have proof of insurance for you. You will not be allowed to participate in this activity without this insurance.
